The INDEX is based on a composite measure of eight pillars of hospital strength: Inpatient Share Ranking, Outpatient Share Ranking, Cost, Charge, Quality, Outcomes, Patient Perspectives, and Financial Stability. These pillars are made up of more than 50 individual indicator variables which comprise the “indicator level”. Indicators are also grouped into three categories (the “index level”, used for reporting purposes): Market, Value, and Finance.
The INDEX leverages the most recent publicly available data from CMS. This release includes the most recently available data as of December 2020. All available data are included in the INDEX and statistical sampling and data projection methodologies are employed when necessary. Read the 2021 methodology by clicking the icon below.
