We’re delighted to be joining the National Rural Health Association in recognizing the nation’s Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals at the annual Critical Access Hospital Conference this week in Kansas City.
The Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals is based upon the results of the 2019 Hospital Strength INDEX, and derived from the list of 2019 Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals. In its ninth year, the INDEX continues to provide rural healthcare leaders and frontline decision makers with a comprehensive and objective lens into hospital performance. Based entirely on publicly available data, the INDEX is comprised of 50 different rural-relevant indicators.
At a time when our research shows that multiple factors have converged to create downward pressure on rural provider revenue and create instability within the rural health safety net, top performers continue to differentiate themselves through their ability to establish lasting improvement across hospital operations and finance.
How do Top 20 CAHs Compare to their Rural Peers?
When compared to the U.S. Critical Access Hospital median, 2019 Top 20 CAHs outperform their rural peers across all eight of the INDEX’s pillars – Inpatient Market Share, Outpatient Market Share, Quality, Outcomes, Patient Perspective, Cost, Charge, and Financial Efficiency. The analysis indicates that the largest difference in performance occurs in Maket Share (both Inpatient and Outpatient), Outcomes and Financial Efficiency.
